Stumphouse Bike Park garners national attention

The Palmetto Conservation Foundation and its partners received a national achievement award this week in Washington, D-C for developing Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park on city of Walhalla property in Oconee County. The awards program is related to the Recreational Trails Program of the Federal Highway Administration, which provides competitive funding for trails and greenways across the country. Recreational Trails money was first received in 2016 to build the Stumphouse Passage of the Palmetto Trail and the first miles of the bike park, which is to expand in phases to about 20 miles. The park is being built to meet standards of the U-S Forest Service and the International Biking Association. The park is the only one of its kind open to the public in Upstate South Carolina. Project officials are extended the Palmetto Trail from the southern trailhead into Walhalla’s downtown and from the northern trailhead to Oconee State Park.
