Verdict: guilty on both charges

R-L Webb, who is in his mid 60s, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison–after an Oconee jury returned verdicts of guilty.  In all, the jury deliberated about nine hours over two days before finding Webb guilty of murder and burglary first degree.  Greg Brock was shot dead in September 2016 at his trailer home near Westminster, after being roused from sleep.  In a trial that ran all week, the jury heard testimony indicating that the theft of a toolbox was the motive in the shooting death.  Webb did not testify at trial, but the jury got to see and hear a video of a jailhouse interview that followed his arrest at a Lavonia, Georgia motel.  At sentencing, Webb chose to make no comment.  Brock’s mother, Margaret, and daughter Morgan spoke in the courtroom after the verdicts were announced and said they were glad to be able to get justice.  Judge McIntosh, before passing sentence, acknowledged Webb’s insistence that he was do drunk the night of the shooting that he remembered very little about what happened.  But the judge questioned whether Webb, in fact, had a memory loss considering that after the shooting, he hid from law enforcement and eventually got a ride to Georgia.
