Tom Howard Newman

Lyman, SC – Tom Howard Newman, 85, formerly of Seneca, SC, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024, at his residence.

A native of Calexico, California, Mr. Newman was the son of the late Tom Horace Newman and Shirley Armstrong Newman Coleman.

Mr. Newman graduated as Class President and Varsity Track Letterman from San Leandro High School in 1957. He served in the Armed Services, which brought him to Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Later, he championed equal rights for women and minorities through his career in human resources and safety work for various construction companies. His roles spanned corporate offices, project sites, and manufacturing plants across the United States, from South Carolina and Texas to Massachusetts, Washington, Colorado, Tennessee, and back to Carolina.

After retiring from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of South Carolina, he worked as a real estate agent in Oconee County. He was always ready to lend his handyman services and proudly boasted he “could fix anything but the crack of dawn or a broken heart.”

An active member of Foothills Community Church since 2002, Mr. Newman served on several committees, but most passionately in the Children’s ministry, Planet Kidz. He could always be found at the ballpark, keeping score for the church softball team.

Mr. Newman was also a Shriner and a Freemason.
