The issue of box stores, large chain retailers

City planning commissioners this month will tackle the proposition of re-zoning as it relates to box stores and large chain retail stores doing business in Walhalla.  They will do so in a 5:30 pm public meeting Monday, April 19 at the Depot.  Mayor Edwards has made clear the public will get the chance to comment and offer feedback before the city adopts any rules that allow or restrict businesses of those kinds.  The issue arose this year after opposition was sounded to the possibility of a Dollar General store construction on W. Main Street, followed by city council’s decision to place a six-month moratorium on licensing discount stores, pending the consideration of changes to city zoning.
