Sidewalk sections closed downtown Walhalla

Sidewalk sections have been closed in part of downtown Walhalla in the aftermath of a discovery by the city’s zoning and code department.  Elijah Hayes, code officer, makes the following announcement:  “The Zoning and Code Department was notified that a building’s architectural features appeared to be separating from the structure.  Upon a visual inspection this was confirmed along with other structural and code violations.  Due to the nature of the structural violation, it was deemed unsafe for the public to be in the vicinity of the building.  The Public Sidewalk has been closed from the public parking lot on South Catherine Street to Main Street and from 200 East Main Street to 204 East Main Street until further notice.  Please for your safety use the other available sidewalks and crosswalks to navigate the city in a safe manner.”  Yellow tape around the street corner is serving as a divider from the sidewalk in front of one of the city’s oldest buildings, the Verner Building, now owned by businessman Walter Torres.
