Sallie Burton

Westminster- Sallie Reid Blackwell Burton, 94, wife of the late James William Burton, of 406A South Bibb Street, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 2:03 pm, on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Seneca Health and Rehabilitation Center, after several months of declining health.   

 

Born in Newry, SC, on Sunday, October 11, 1925, Mrs. Burton was the ninth and youngest child born to the late Jerry and Arabelle Long Blackwell.  She married her husband James William Burton on Saturday, October 6, 1945.  She and James enjoyed 40 years and 10 days of marriage together until his death on Wednesday, October 16, 1985.  Mrs. Burton retired from Beacon Manufacturing in 1987 after 32 years of service in the spinning and cloth room.  After her retirement, she enjoyed attending The Westminster Mealsite and Senior Solutions for many years.  Mrs. Burton was currently the oldest member of Holly Springs Baptist Church, she was a very faithful member of her church, where she had over 30 years of perfect attendance, she was a member of The Adult Sunday School Class and The Joy Club.  Mrs. Burton loved Southern Gospel Music and for several years, her and her two daughters, Louise and Ruth Ann sang as a group known as “The Brasstown Trio”.  Mrs. Burton read her Bible daily, was an avid journal keeper, and she loved to collect scrapbooks of wedding announcements, obituaries, and other newspaper clippings.  Mrs. Burton also enjoyed taking photographs and cooking for her family and friends, especially cakes, biscuits, and fresh garden vegetables. 

 

Survivors include her son, James “Larry” Burton (Margie); her daughters, Louise Carter (Charles) and Ruth Ann Holbrooks (Bobby), all of Westminster; a brother Luther Blackwell (Mamie) of Seneca; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. 

 

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her infant son, Jimmy Burton; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Rev. Taylor and Ella Moore Burton; two brothers, Ed and Arthur Blackwell; and five sisters, Fannie Webb, Bessie Towe, Effie Hunnicutt, Hattie Harris, and Annie Mae Todd. 

 

A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 29, 2020, at 3:00 pm at Holly Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. John McKnight and Rev. Glenn Kelly officiating.  Burial will follow in the

 

 

 

Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm, prior to the service at Holly Springs Baptist Church.
