Remediating the landfills

Oconee County Council awarded a $107 thousand contract to a North Carolina company for remediation work at the county landfills near Seneca and Walhalla.  Most of the discussion last night centered on protecting the groundwater in the closed Seneca landfill on the Wells Highway.  The county’s commercial and debris landfill remains open.  At the closed landfill, the county designated Smith Gardner Engineering of Raleigh to implement a PlumeStop (Liquid Activated Carbon) enhancement bio-remediation for about 250 feet to determine the effectiveness of the barrier.  The plan has been approved by DHEC as a pilot study, and Swain Stihl, director of county solid waste, says this type of remedy has worked at other landfills.  In a related action, the council also awarded a contract worth $269,500 to a California company to supply the products to be used in the corrective action project.  The monies are to be drawn from the reserve funds of the solid waste account.
