Progress reported on the 9-11 memorial

Where once there were tennis courts is being transformed into an Oconee County memorial in honor of those hurt and killed in the September 2001 terror attacks at three U-S locations.  When finished, this drive-thru memorial off SC 183/the Walhalla-Pickens Highway, is to serve as an educational tool for Oconee County school children, as well as a stop for visitors from the general public.  The Oconee memorial will feature actual debris from the collapse of the World Trade Towers.  Brandon Shirley, the Keowee chief, has been involved in the multi-year fundraising project to make the project a reality.  And this morning Shirley told 101.7/WGOG NEWS he can predict with confidence that the work will be completed in time for September 11, 2021–which is to be the 20th anniversary of the morning that terrorists hijacked airplanes and crashed them into buildings and an open field.
