Popular recreation spots cleansed of litter!

The Rock in upper Oconee and Fall Creek Landings One and Two make up three of the more popular recreation areas in Oconee County.  Occasionally, however, they are the scenes for unlawful activity, including indiscriminate littering.  Last Saturday a litter pickup effort netted nearly 1,000 pounds of trash.  The lifting was accomplished by individuals who, to fulfill their sentences, reported to the recreation area and picked up litter as part of community service in place of paying a fine for their citations. Supervising that pickup were Environmental Services Officer Brandon Meadows and Marine Unit deputy sheriffs Judson Minyard and Jonathon Hodge.  Since May, deputies have issued 90 citations for charges that include littering, alcohol and drug violations, public disorderly conduct, and minor in possession of alcohol.   There are plans for another Fall Creek litter pickup in October.
