October is National Fire Prevention Month

Next month is National Fire Prevention Month.  During Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15, Walhalla Fire Department personnel will fan out to the local schools with fire safety messages.  Throughout October the theme will be “Don’t Wait:  Check the Date!  Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”  Walhalla fire fighters remind everyone to replace their smoke detector batteries when the time changes.  This year the clocks roll back Sunday, November 6.  The fire department has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide free smoke detectors.  For residents in and around Walhalla, they will install them in your home at no charge.  If you live outside the Walhalla district, you are asked to contact your appropriate fire department.
