Lois Douberley

Seneca, SC — Lois Werner Douberley, 97, wife of the late Sam Douberley, of Seneca, passed away on

Thursday, April 11, 2024, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina.

Born in Miami, FL., Mrs. Douberley was the daughter of the late Charles and Marie Grafe Werner. She

retired as a county planning administrator and was a member of Walhalla Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Douberley is survived by her son-in-law: Gregg Smith and his wife Melanie of Gainesville,

Georgia, granddaughter Abigail Hester and husband Corey, grandchildren Percephone and Abi Hester

of Fountain Inn, South Carolina and daughter-n-law Bonnie Douberley of Seneca, South Carolina.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Douberley was preceded in death by her daughter: Bonnie

  1. Smith; and son: Bruce Douberley.

Lois loved baseball. She was named “Homerun Queen” of her 6 th grade class at Comstock Elementary School in Miami and remained a fan of the game her entire life. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, rarely ever missing a game on TV every season.

Beginning in 1944, Lois was employed at Florida Power and Light in Miami. In 1961 she moved to

Mountain Rest, South Carolina with her mother Marie Werner and children Bruce and Bonnie. She was

soon employed by the Oconee County Planning Commission in Walhalla where she had a long career

as an Administrative Assistant. Lois was known for her dedication to Oconee County where she worked

long hours, attending meetings often late at night and keeping meticulous records.

Lois was an excellent cook. She loved having her family come to her home in Mountain Rest while she

served up favorites such as her famous pot roast with noodles and gravy. She was also an excellent

seamstress. She would hem, sew, and repair clothes for her children and grandchildren rather than

have them purchase new clothes. She was quite frugal, yet willing and helpful to assist her family in any

way, financially and with her love. As a single mother, she put both of her children through school and

saw Bruce and Bonnie graduate from Clemson University.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Davenport Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of America at www. bgca.org.
