Law to provide for Walhalla curfew tabled

For now, the idea of an ordinance that would give Walhalla’s elected leaders the authority to order curfews is off the table.  In the opinion of at least one councilman, the entire idea should be re-thought.  In the aftermath of about one week of civil unrest on Main Street, Last night Councilman Danny Woodward, chairman of the public safety committee, introduced an ordinance, but questions arose whether it would conflict with individual gun rights.  A legal opinion is pending from the office of the state attorney’s general and the city attorney has suggested a wording change.  After two members of the public spoke out last night against a curfew ordinance, Woodward moved to table.  Councilman David Underwood said he didn’t like the connotation of the word table and he preferrs that the entire curfew idea be re-considered.  He was challenged by Mayor Edwards who wanted to know how many curfew opponents were present the one particular night when the police and others worried that protests and counter-protests of George Floyd’s death could have erupted in gunfire in the city.
