How to select Jerry Lee’s successor

This just off the press from the Oconee School District:

“At a special called board meeting held on October 6th, the School District of Oconee County Board of Trustees voted to solicit applications to fill the current District I vacancy.  The Board will conduct interviews with qualified candidates before appointing someone to the position.

Mr. Joe Rukat, acting chairman, said, “It is in the best interest of the district to have a fully functioning board.  Therefore it is our goal to appoint a new District I representative in the next couple weeks so that the board is ready to go after the election.”

Qualifications to serve include:

Candidate must reside in Oconee County District I (Oconee County District I Map)
Candidate must possess a valid voter registration certificate
There is also a provision in the South Carolina Constitution that prohibits dual office holding, except in instances when an officer is given ex-officio status by statute. Any office holder who is elected to a second office must vacate the first office. Thus, a board member may not hold another office. Under this provision “office holding” means being elected or appointed to an office of the state or of its subdivisions.
The South Carolina Constitution also prohibits any person convicted of a felony under state or federal law or other crimes related to elections and voting from being elected to and serving in an office in this state or its political subdivisions including school districts.
Interested candidates must submit a letter of interest, one-page resume and copy of their valid voter registration certificate by 12:00pm noon on Monday, October 12th.  Interviews will be held during Executive Session at the regularly scheduled board meeting on October 19th.  Candidates may submit information in person to the district office (Attn: Shannon Gibson) or may email it to [email protected].”
