Clamor over proposed gun range on Stamp Creek Road

Oconeeans living near a proposed gun range took their opposition to last night’s County Council meeting. Multiple speakers from the audience asked the county fathers not to approve the range proposed for at 453 E. Stamp Creek Road.  They are worried about safety and noise, as well as environmental concerns because of lead from spent bullets eventually leaching into nearby Lake Keowee. The opponents came mostly from the Keowee Key and the Cliffs communities. Their councilman, District One’s John Elliot, a Keowee Key resident, also registered his opposition. Seeking to build the range are Scott Durham, owner of the Gun Shop in Seneca and a member of the Seneca City Council, and his son, Matt Durham. As described, the range would be members-only. Guests would be allowed.  The range would be unrestricted as to types of weapons and ammunition and would include a 1,000-yard rifle range.
