The cold is no time to be outdoors and lost. That’s what happened last night to a pair of teenagers who went hiking in a remote part of Oconee County. Fortunately, according to Scott Krein of Oconee Emergency Services, they were found not long after they went missing near highway 107.

Oconee County Schools will operate on a 2 hour delay Thursday, February 19. Faculty and staff should report at regular times. Buildings will be open at normal time for those parents who need to drop off kids early. Fire destroyed a two-story home Friday on Chattooga Lake Road in Mountain Rest. Two people lived in the home, but they managed to make it out safely. Charlie Vissage, chief of the Mountain Rest Fire Department, said fire fighters encountered fire through the roof of the house. By today, the cause of that fire is still unknown.

Extreme cold and limited visibility have impacted the Lake Hartwell search for missing kayaker Brady Hamby. According to Scott Krein, director of Oconee Emergency Services, as weather permits, limited search operations will pick up for the missing 64-year old West Union resident. Krein says, “Until the weather has passed and more suitable for safe operations our efforts will be suspended.”

Oconee public schools are in session at regular time today. For some, however, President’s Day is a holiday. Banks are closed. There’s no mail delivery. Regular county offices are closed today.

A fire that started in a bedroom has taken a heavy toll in Keowee Key. Yesterday morning’s fire at 2 Calm Sea Drive, near the North entrance to the home development, broke out around 7:30. Late into the night, crews worked diligently to correct problems caused by yesterday’s intense high winds.
