Former Westminster policeman arrested

Law enforcement records show that a former Westminster policeman was charged yesterday with breach of peace, aggravated in nature; and the use of firearm while under the influence. Warrants released by the Oconee Sheriff’s Office, the arresting agency, allege that Andrew Major Rankin, 27, “repeatedly discharged a shotgun on his property at approximately 12:44 am, within fifty (50) feet of a county road, and in full view of neighborhood residents.” The incident is alleged to have occurred Sunday at Rankin’s home on Castlebrook Drive near Walhalla. Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said the arrest took place as deputies were called to a disturbance. The defendant’s former employer, Westminster Police Chief Rory Jones, says Rankin was a city officer until last Saturday, but no longer is with the department.
