Why a slowpoke law could make South Carolina traffic safer

Oconeean Dick Cottingham has driven a lot through South Carolina, even some driving in European countries.  And he’s convinced it’s time for South Carolina to adopt a law that would require some drivers to step on the gas … or be ticketed by a traffic cop.  Cottingham has been campaigning for the South Carolina legislature to forbid slow-moving vehicles from using the passing lane on a multi-lane highway.  He sees them as “Left Lane Lucys.”  They tend to clog the left hand lanes by driving at or below the speed limit and inhibit faster drivers who lose patience and make, a times, sudden shifts to the right hand lane to pass the slower vehicles.  Accidents can result.  Several states, including Georgia, ticket  slow drivers, and some European countries do even more to discourage the practice.  Cottingham believes it’s time South Carolina does the same.  He makes his case on this Sunday’s ‘Community Sound Off’ on 101.7/WGOG.
