Turbines to be replaced at Oconee reactor

A moving company is delivering turbines for installation at the Oconee Nuclear Station. Duke Energy plans to replace three, low-pressure turbines on Unit 2 this fall during a scheduled re-fueling outage. Those turbines traveled from New York state to Charleston by barge, then to Newry by train. A Duke spokeswoman says the move will not block any roads, and the expectation is there will be minimal impact on traffic. Turbines can be used to generate electrical power when combined with a generator. Combined, the turbine, the skid on which it’s delivered and the moving equipment itself weighs more than 530 thousand pounds. The turbines are scheduled to be delivered between now and July 1.
