Skeptical reaction to move toward paper ballot feature

A member of the Clemson Area League of Women Voters has reacted with some skepticism to South Carolina’s move toward a paper ballot feature in the next statewide voting system. The State Election Commission last week called for requests for proposals from vendors to deliver a solution to the lack of a paper record of a voter’s ballot. That would replace the current paperless system, but the League of Women Voters’ Eleanor Hare wonders what good a paper trail will be if election officials don’t look at it. “They are saying there will be a paper record. They are not saying they will look at it,” Hare says. The election commission wants proposals by March 4, with the expectation to choose a new voting system by the summer.
