School Board to seek an additional tax mill

Oconee school trustees exercised an available option last night, but it might not please the county’s governing board—the Oconee County Council. On a motion by Buddy Herring, the board unanimously voted to request one additional tax mill from the county council for the new school year that will start July 1. District officials had been contemplating a new budget that holds the line on millage, but Herring’s successful motion seeks to relieve pressure on the district’s rainy day account on which it’ll rely to balance a new, proposed budget for 2019-20 of nearly $107 million. Gloria Moore, district finance director, last night presented a revised budget based on figures gained from state revenue projections from the House Ways and Means Committee. Moore believes an additional one mill could mean as much as $400 thousand dollars to the public schools.
