RICHARD JONES

Richard Fred Jones, 84, entered into eternity on Saturday January 31, 2026 at Oconee Memorial Hospital. He went to be with his Savior Jesus Christ and his beloved wife, following a battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Betty Lamb Jones, parents John David “J.D.” Jones and Eva Orr-Jones, brothers James, Ralph, Bill and sisters, Rose, Lucille and Fanny.

Richard is survived by his four children: daughters Rhonda Donovan (Dennis) and Pam Williams (Jeff), sons Rick Jones (Karen) and Rob Jones; brother John Jones, sister Myra Ann Jones-Garrison, ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Richard was a native of Oconee County who grew up in the Tamassee Community. In his younger years he was an accomplished athlete, serving as a Captain on the 1959-1960 Tamassee High School Basketball team that finished as State Runner Ups in Class C that season. After his graduation in 1960, Richard entered the workforce and later became an Electrician. He moved his family to Michigan in 1968. Richard worked as the Lead Millwright at Associated Springs. After his plant closed in 1983, he moved the family to his native community. Richard built his home mostly by himself on land that was part of the property he grew up on.  At the time he was employed at Avondale Mills.

In the late 90’s Richard made the decision to accept a job to become the Maintenance Superintendent at Tamassee DAR School. Richard and his wife served as house-parents at the DAR School allowing them to make a positive impact on countless children. Richard served as the President of the Tamassee Alumni Association for several years. He remained employed at Tamassee DAR School until his retirement.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Salem, where he faithfully attended and served as a Deacon and Elder. He was a driving force behind the construction of the church’s Multi-Purpose Building which stands today. While living in Michigan, he served his church for years by driving a bus throughout Detroit to pick up children and take them to service.

Richard remained active in church softball and basketball well into his 50’s. Upon retirement he thoroughly enjoyed working in his garden and yard. He was a dedicated sports fan who enjoyed watching football, basketball, baseball and other sports on TV. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid fan of gospel and bluegrass music.

Richard was known for his colorful catchphrases and talkative demeanor. He was known for his integrity, honesty and relentless work ethic. He championed the values of faith, hard work, discipline, accountability and determination.

While he leaves this earth, the impact Richard had on those around him for his lifespan of over 8 decades will live on for generations to come.

A Graveside Service will be held 3:30 pm Thursday, February 5th, 2026 at Alexander Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family prior to the service 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, Thursday, February 5th, 2026 at Sandifer Funeral Home.
