Request to restrict outdoor water use

The following announcement this afternoon from the city of Walhalla:

“On June 30, Walhalla water officials discovered that a water pump
suppling the Walhalla Pretreatment Water Plant had failed. Some weeks before,
officials had determined that a motor attached to another pump needed repair and
had sent it for repair at that time. Unfortunately, they did not detect that the pump
attached to that motor had also failed until they installed the newly repaired motor on
June 30, leaving the city’s water plant with only one functioning water pump. City
water workers have removed both failed pumps and they are now in a repair facility.
Both pumps, which have an estimated service life of 20-25 years, failed after only 6
years of use. Walhalla officials are engaging with the pump manufacturer to determine
the cause of this early pump failure.
City staff have been working with contractors around the clock to ensure the supply of
water for its customers. Until the pumps are replaced, the City of Seneca is supplying
Walhalla Water with supplemental water to lessen the strain on the remaining water
pump and the City of Westminster is on standby to do the same, should it be needed.
The City of Walhalla thanks both municipalities for their assistance.
Walhalla Water is asking that its customers help during this time by restricting its outdoor
water use. This includes watering lawns, filling pools and washing cars. A reduction in
water demand will lighten the strain on the water pump until the repairs and
replacement are complete.
The City of Walhalla remains committed to providing a safe and reliable water supply to
its customers. Thank you for your continued support and patience as improvements are being made.”
