Overseas aid discussed at CU

Two leading Washington officials, on a visit to Clemson University, said the U-S must sustain a robust foreign assistance program because the price of disengagement is unacceptable. However, both Senator Lindsey Graham and Rajiv Shah of the Agency for International Development say the one percent of the federal budget that funds America’s overseas aid initiatives has to be wisely spent. Graham and Shah took part yesterday on a panel moderated by Clemson President James Barker. On trips to Afghanistan and other regions, Graham said he has seen firsthand how communities benefit from a regular and clean water supply, healthy livestock, and fertile soil. Graham said, “You have to provide the people the ability to sustain the fight. Most of all, you have to give them hope.”
