On calendar, trustees and lawmakers are likeminded

Like the three men who represent Oconee in the General Assembly, the county school trustees are sounding agreement that the calendar for the academic year should call for students in all grade levels to start the 2020-21 year on the same date in August. The Oconee district has state board of education approval to start classes as early as August 10, but Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland last night indicated that the legislature is likely willing to be lenient and allow all school start the same time. Provided Oconee trustees cast a vote, which they did not last night, students and teachers will be required to be ready to start on Monday, August 10. Thorsland says look for that vote during the February board meeting.
