NFL Training Camp

The Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons are both dealing with major injuries and heated joint practices as they wrap up their August training camps.  Up in Charlotte, head coach Dave Canales pushed his squad through a grueling practice where the heat index hit a blistering 117 degrees. The team used the extreme weather to prepare for their joint practices against the Jacksonville Jaguars.  The biggest worry for Carolina is at running back. Starter Chuba Hubbard is out week-to-week with a hamstring injury. This leaves the workload to rookie Jonathan Brooks, who is carefully working his way back from a past college knee injury. On the bright side, rookie receiver Xavier Legette was held out just as a precaution and is expected to play soon.  The Falcons traveled north to Indiana for intense joint practices against the Indianapolis Colts. While the offense had mixed results, the story of the week was the relentless Atlanta defensive line. Led by young players like Brandon Dorlus, the Falcons’ defense repeatedly broke through the line to stuff the Colts’ running game.  In the passing game, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa connected with star receiver Drake London for some big plays, though the drive ultimately stalled against a tough Colts secondary. Meanwhile, rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is still waiting to be cleared for full 11-on-11 team drills as he recovers from knee surgery.  Both teams are using these final camp days to set their rosters before the weekend’s exhibition games.
