New business takes baby steps in Salem

Wilma Burton is making her good-tasting biscuits for the morning breakfast crowd, and she’s doing it in a new business in the heart of downtown Salem.  Where once Riley’s used to operate is now a 3-week old quick stop convenience store.  Mayor Lynn Towe this morning proudly announced that state clearance has been given for hot meals inside one of the many buildings that Towe says can be re-occupied to bring new economic life in the downtown of the small Oconee municipality.  Like many long-time Salem residents, Towe can remember the days long ago when there were a number of thriving small businesses, and it’s his goal to help re-birth the commercial economy there.
