May is Foster Care Awareness Month

The month of May is recognized as Foster Care Awareness Month in South Carolina.  According to the DSS, it’s an opportunity to highlight the need for temporary caregivers for young people in need of foster care.  Children enter foster care when their parents or family can’t safely care for them and no other alternative for placement exists.  Over the weekend, the DSS foster care dashboard showed more than  4,000 children in foster care in the state, 86 of them from Oconee County.  To learn about becoming a foster parent or ways to support foster parents in your community, visit https://dss.sc.gov/foster-care/.
