Marriage numbers versus divorce numbers

Looking at the numbers, it appears matrimony has the edge over divorce in Oconee County – especially if you combine ceremonies with permits issued. Last year there were 263 divorces granted by the county Family Court. The office of Probate Judge issued 482 permits and performed 183 ceremonies. These days the two offices are located apart from each other in the County Seat. Not so when the former county courthouse at Main and S. Church was home to the Family Court and, just a short walk to the Probate Court. That amazed one local state lawmaker who thought it remarkable that you could get married in one place and then walk down the hall to get divorced.
