Lower bond denied for sex crime defendant

A defense attorney’s bid to secure a lower bond for his client failed, but an Oconee judge promised he may renew the request in six months, provided the case stays unresolved. So far, Michael Matthew Banks of Townville has served 131 days in jail, awaiting a trial date. But Judge Sprouse yesterday viewed the charge criminal sexual conduct with a minor third degree as serious. The bond is now $25 thousand, and Banks’ attorney says his client can’t meet it. The attorney said his client is innocent of the allegation.
