Livestock rules reviewed by planning commission

The extent to which a Walhallan may keep livestock on his property turned into a complex issue last night for the city’s planning commision.  The commission took up the city council’s request to decide whether a city law, last amended in 1990, should be changed to allow someone to keep and maintain animals such as swine on their properties.  In the end, the commission decided to make no change to the law restricting livestock from roaming the corporate limits.  A Walhalla woman recently appealed to the city council for permission to keep a pot belly pig, which she described as a domesticated pet.  But the planning commissioners expressed concern that if pot belly pigs were allowed, the city could be obligated to allow city residents to keep miniature horses and goats.  Chairman Chris Grant said that, while a member of the police force, he was once confronted with what to do about six horses that strayed onto Broad Street, from a grazing location inside the city’s flood plain.
