Lake Hartwell algae bloom

Discolored water and a funny smell are traced to Lake Hartwell water that the city of Lavonia, Georgia treats to retail to its customers.  But officials say Lavonia water users should not be afraid to drink the water.  The Lavonia city manager, Charles Cawthon, says algae blooms are a typical summer time event.  In recent years, algae blooms also have produced smelly and discolored water for customers of the Pioneer Rural Water District and the Anderson Joint Regional Water System.  WLHR Radio quotes the Lavonia city manager as saying, “It really has accelerated this year because the water turned really warm, really quickly.  Typically, we don’t experience these hot temperatures until July.  I’ve spoken with the (water) plant several times.  We are adjusting our processes to try to minimize the problem.”  He predicts the problem will begin to dissipate in one week or so.  Meantime, he suggests using a water filter such as a PUR or Brita on your tap or a water filter pitcher.
