Midway, GA – James David Nelson, 62, formerly of Westminster, passed away Monday, November 22nd, 2021 at Magnolia Manor of Midway Georgia.

The son of the late Charles “C.H.” and Carolyn Nelson, David is survived by his brothers, Charles Nelson of Washington, DC, and Mark Nelson (Natalie), of Westminster; and a sister Julie McGuffin of Westminster.  David is also survived by nieces, Jenny (Jamie) Jones of Westminster, Katie Melton (Ben) of Seneca, Holly (Tanner) Swink of Ware Shoals, Linley Nelson of Westminster; and nephews, Bryan (Katelin) Barker of Townville, Daniel Barker of Greenville, and Philip Nelson of Westminster; three great-nieces and two great-nephews; two aunts Kathy Rashley of Rock Hill, SC, and Pam Allen of Dawsonville, GA, and an uncle Johnny Whiten of Fair Play, SC, and many cousins.

David graduated from Westminster High School and attended the University of South Carolina, until a car accident ended his studies.  He regularly attended Corinth Baptist Church, when he was a resident of Westminster.

All of his life David was blessed with many talents and friends.  He was an accomplished player of chess and loved public speaking and dramatic recitations and readings, winning several declamation contests and awards. David loved art and was a gifted artist and won awards for and created many paintings, sculptures, and ceramics.

He was a big rock music fan, especially of his beloved Eagles and Aerosmith, owning all of their albums and later tapes and CDs. He loved dogs with a passion and rescued and helped many. In later life he enjoyed working as a builder’s assistant to his neighbor Hoyt Vinson.

And, since the age of first discovering sweets, David loved chocolate-covered cherries!  Family and friends made a tradition of giving them to him on every special occasion. You were truly special if he elected to share one with you…and he always did.

David was a generous and loving person who will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Westminster Gideons, P.O. Box 662 Westminster, SC 29693
