Granite quarry plans to be discussed in northeast Georgia

If you’ve driven in and around Lavonia, Georgia recently, you are likely to have spotted “Stop the Rock Quarry” signs on the sides of highways–highway 59, highway 328/Gumlog Road, and throughout the city of Lavonia.  At least one grassroots group has formed to contest Vulcan Materials’ plans for a former textile plant on highway 59.  A follow-up drop-in meeting by company officials takes place today, which the company hopes will assure local and area residents are fully informed of their plans.  At an earlier drop-in, according to Lake Hartwell Radio WLHR, many people said they were concerned and worried about truck traffic and noise.  Vulcan’s Jimmy Flemming says this evening’s drop-in is an effort to address concerns and answer questions.
