Gas pump price tax increase July 1

Not even a world pandemic or an EF3 tornado can block a scheduled gas pump tax increase that will be charged at fill-up time, starting July 1 in South Carolina.  On the 1st of next month, the motor fuel user fee will increase two cents a gallon, from 26 cents to 28 cents.  According to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, the tax supports road, bridge, and infrastructure construction.  Since 2017, when the motor fuel user fee first increased, about $364 million in revenues have been deposited into the state Infrastructure Maintenance Trust Fund.  And, according to the DOT, those deposits support more than $1.3 billion in road and bridge work. To help offset the increase, South Carolina taxpayers can claim a credit on their state returns.
