Federal lawsuit on behalf of discharged Clemson professor

The ACLU – the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina – announces a federal lawsuit against Clemson University for what ACLU alleges was a First Amendment violation when it fired faculty member Dr. Joshua Bregy for sharing a Facebook post critical of the assassinated conservative pundit Charlie Kirk.  Bregy worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental and Engineering and Earth Sciences, until he was fired last month.  According to the ACLU, the firing “sent shockwaves through the faculty, triggered an emergency meeting of the faculty senate, and has fractured the faculty’s trust and confidence in the Provost, University President, and Board of Trustees.”  The lawsuit seeks a jury trial to decide whether the professor should be reinstated and awarded back pay, and damages, among other relief.
