DONALD SHERWOOD CHAMBERLAIN

Salem, SC—Donald Sherwood Chamberlain, MD, FACR, 90, husband of the late Joy Knudsen Chamberlain, of Salem, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Cottingham Hospice House.

 

Born in Cincinnati, OH, Dr. Chamberlain was the son of the late Sherwood Archibald Chamberlain and Christine Mary Carter Chamberlain. Don graduated from Northwestern University and Medical School and completed an internship and Radiology residency at the University of Cincinnati. He was a captain in the Army for two years and spent 25 years in practice with Radiology Inc. in South Bend, IN. He was awarded Fellow of the American College of Radiology and councilor from Indiana, Trustee to the Indiana State Medical Association, Chairman of American Physicians Life, Director of HAS and Indiana Peer Review, member of the Radiologic Society of North America and American Roentgen Ray Society. Don was a beloved member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and he served on a number of Community Bank boards over the years.

 

Don’s favorite hobby was ham radio with the call of W9DC. He was active in international radio programs and earned many awards. As a member of Keowee Key Golf Club, he won a number of competitions and club championships.

 

Don and his wife, Joy, were married 64 years, and she played a key role in raising the family, and managing home affairs, as well as gardening. They retired to Keowee Key in 1988, which allowed Don to be Community President for three years and a founding member of the Keowee Fire Commission from its creation, while Joy participated in a number of community activities. They visited over 100 countries, with special interests in antiquities, nature, and native cultures. Joy predeceased Don, but they had a full and wonderful life together. Diana Malcolm, a long-time friend had her husband pass away earlier. She assisted Don in getting through several difficult medical issues and eventually they got together and lived part-time at the Foothills Retirement Community and Keowee Key.

 

Don is survived by his son: Daniel (Kami); daughter: Cheryl; grandchildren: Nicholas, Christopher (Nikki), Coleman, and Olivia; and great-grandchild: Camden.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Keowee Fire Department, 101 Maintenance Dr., Salem, SC 29676.

 

The family is at their respective homes. Davenport Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
