County Treasurer Acree enacts change for better ease
Effective this past Monday, the office of Oconee Treasurer Acree began collecting South Carolina DMV late fees in conjunction with vehicle property tax payments and registration renewals. Heretofore, taxpayers who paid vehicle taxes after the expiration date and owed a biennial registration fee were required to visit a DMV branch office or the DMV website to pay the applicable late fee before receiving an updated registration and decal. County taxpayers may now pay vehicle property taxes, registration fees, and late fees during a single transaction at the Oconee Treasurer’s Office in Walhalla. At the end of the transaction, taxpayers immediately get their updated registration and decal. That eliminates the need for a separate trip to a DMV branch office. The new service is available only through payments in-person at the treasurer’s office. The county treasurer says her office will continue to evaluate processes and implement efficiencies that improve service for Oconeeans.
