Blue-green algae in Lake Hartwell waters

New samples taken by the state show the continued presence of blue-green algal in Lake Hartwell, capable of producing toxins.  On Tuesday teams from the Aquatic Science Division of the Department of Environmental Services collected samples from 16 locations around the lake.  Their observations showed the bloom most noticeable in coves along the shore.  The maximum concentration in the sample set was 0.65 micrograms per liter, which is below the recreational standard of 8 micrograms per liter. The following recommendations continue:  avoid direct contact with lake water in areas where the HAB (harmful algal bloom) is observed.  Keep pets and animals from swimming in or drinking from the lake in areas where the HAB is observed.
