A defense to Licensed Plate Recognition criticisms

South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association says county sheriffs have always embraced innovation and technology that helps protect South Carolinians.  And, in a news release it says South Carolina law enforcement agencies have safeguards in place governing LPR – Licensed Plate Recognition technology.  The use of such cameras in Oconee County came under criticism at a recent county council meeting.  The statewide sheriff’s group says, “South Carolina’s sheriffs support responsible use of LPR technology because it has repeatedly proven its value in protecting victims, locating missing persons, solving crimes, and making our communities safer from Oconee County, through Richland County, down go Charleston County, and all our great state-in-between.” But it concedes the system can be abused.  In that case, an individual such as a deputy, sheriffs have the responsibility to investigate allegations of employee misconduct.
