Time for a new Walhalla festival

From her perch on Walhalla’s N. Catherine Street, Maxie Duke has an idea for a new festival in the County Seat. A festival, she says, that can make a mark in ways similar to Walhalla’s Oktoberfest and Mayfest. The point she makes is that, thanks to groups of determined people, Walhalla about five years ago was able to save Stumphouse Tunnel. Now she says let’s celebrate what is the only known incomplete tunnel of the 1850s on the National Register of Historic Places in South Carolina. She’s hoping that the Greater Walhalla Chamber of Commerce would take the lead to organize what she calls a Stumphouse Mountain Festival. She believes a weekend in July or August would be ideal.
