MORNING SPORTS BREAK-Thursday, July 3, 2008

Clemson University football player DeAndre McDaniel, who was chagrged by a

female student with assault and battery during an off-campus incident, will remain

at Clemson after appearing before the university Student Judicial Board. The

sophomore from Tallahassee, Fla. will remain in good standing  pending any further

evidence presented, according to his atorneys. Coach Tommy Bowden has not

commented on the matter, is on vacation and will return to his office Monday.

 

On a personal note, grandpas love to talk about their grandsons....and I have two -

Michael, 12, and Jonathan, 10 who are having terrific seasons as members of travel

teams from Georgia. Both are pitchers and throw blazing fast balls and hit the long

ball. Jonathan played in a big tournament in Nashville, Tenn. last weekend and smacked

three home runs and pitched eleven hitless innings in a three-game tournament. Michael,

playing for a 12-under Georgia allstar team, is headed to Cooperstown, New York today for a

weekend tournament at the home of baseball and location of the baseball Hall of Fame.

Both young men are straight A students in Gainesville, Georgia and want to play professional

baseball.....their grandfather (me) played American Legion baseball and high school baseball

Westminster High, and their father ---Mark Gettys of Daniel High School and Clemson University`

set state football. soccer and baseball records in the early eighties. So..we claim its in the genes

for Michael and Jonathan....congratulations guys from your biggest fan!

July 2

In American Legion baseball, the Walhalla Post 124 team rallied in the ninth to

defeat Easley last nite in Walhalla 19-15. The team was trailing Easley 15-10

in the eighth inning. The team has earned a sport in the postseason playoffs and will

close out its regluar season tonight at Greenville.

 

An Upstate cyclist has won a spot on the US Olympic Team. Greenville's

George Hincapie was named to the team yesterday and becomes the

only five-time Olympic cyclist in US history.He has been a member

 of eight Tour de France-winning teams, but has never won an Olympic medal.

The 35-year old is the oldest of the 21-rider contingent named by the

US Cycling to comprise this year's Olympic team.

In football, public sale of Clemson University football tickets will begin

Monday at 8 am. A limited number of season tickets in the upper decks can be

July 1

In college baseball, Clemson Tiger freshman Kyle Parker has been named

a freshman All-American. The Tiger's first year player joined

Miami pitcher Chris Hernandez as ACC players chosen by Baseball America

Monday. Kyle had 14 homers , 50 RBIs and hit .300 this past season. He is also

a quarterback on the football team for the Tigers. Congratulations Kyle!

June 27

The Tigers may have their first NBA draft candidate in several years in James

Mays. The NBA draft is underway today and he--and many Tiger fans -will be

watching and waiting as the NBA draft begins at 7 pm tonite on ESPN.

He hopes to make it in the second round of the 60-player pick.He has worked

out with a number of teams. He originally declared for the draft following his

junior season, but returned to Clemson hoping to enhance his draft propects and

proceeded to lead the Tigers to an NCAA Tournament berth.

June 26

 

In baseball, the collegiate USA Baseball National team takes on Chinese

Taipei at Fluor Field in Greenville tonite at 7:05pm. The game will mark

the second time the USA National team has played in Greenville. The last

appearance was in 2006. The USA team will be in the Czech Republic

next month for the FISU World Championships.

In collegiate football, Ray Ray McElrathbey of Clemson is transferring to

Washington,DC's Howard University to play football and earn his masters

degree. His decision was made largely, he told reporters, because of his

concern for his 11-year old brother he is raising.

In basketball, Furman Paladin junior forward Stanley Jones will finish his career at

Francis Marion. He has spent the last three seasons at Furman.

More in football, some South Carolina State football will be televised this fall.

ESPNU will carry a tape delay of the Delaware State game on Nov. 1 a live telecast

of the  SC State-Howard game on Thursday, Nov. 6.

The Walhalla American Post #124 lost on the road to Fountain Inn last nite 7-1.

The team returns on the home field for play Friday, welcoming Easley for a

7:30 pm first pitch. Coach Ed Taylor extends an invitation to all baseball fans to

come out and see some of the best high school players in area.

June 25

Chad Dorsett of sister station WSNW in Seneca reports this morning that

Clemson University football starter DeAndre McDaniel was arrested over

the weekend and charged with assaulting his girlfriend at his apartment

in Central. According to a Central Police Department report, McDaniel's

girlfriend reported that she was at his apartment early Saturday when an

argument ensued and, according to her, McDaniel choked, punched and pushed

her down a flight of stairs. She suffered a neck injury and multiple bruises.

According to the warrant, McDaniel is charged with assault and battery of a

high and aggravated nature. He played in all 13 of Clemson's games last

season and was projected to be a starter for this year's team.

In Golden Corner high school sports, Woodmont High School coach and teacher

Ben Abrams died Saturday. For 37 years, he was coach and teacher at

Ellen Woodside High which later became Woodmont. He retired in 1987, but

remained active with the teams and the community, serving as a Sunday school teacher and

deacon at Washington Baptist Church. He was called Mr. Wildcat and will be missed

in Upstate athletics.

In American Legion baseball, the Walhalla Post 124 lost to the big bats of Greenwood

last night 9-4 in a game played in Walhalla. Post 124's record is now 3-6. The team

travels to Fountain Inn for a 7:30 pm game tonite.

June 24

 

In baseball, the Greenville Drive took a "Bark in the Park Day" win from the

Hickory Crawdads 10-5 yesterday. Fans were invited to bring their dogs along

for the event. The Drive will meet the Crawdads again today at 7 pm at

Greenville's Fluor Field.

In American Legion baseball, the Walhalla Post 124 will host Greenwood today.

First pitch will be at 7:30 pm at the Walhalla High School Field.

A local professional football player is returning home this week to host a celebrity

charity weekend which will feature other pro players.Dallas Cowboys cornerback Evan

Oglesby will host the weekend of activities Friday and Saturday. The weekend begins

with a free youth football camp and dance clinic Friday at Stephens County Recreation Center in

Toccoa. On Saturday, a golf tournament will be held at Apple Mountain Resort and

Golf Club in Clarkesville. Willis McGahee of the Baltimore Ravens and Roy Williams of the Cowboys

are two of an expected twenty NFL players expected to attend. Proceeds from the activities will

benefit the Evan Oglesby Foundation which was formed to help provide kids in single parent

June 13

Two Tigers are close in the hunt with Tiger Woods - all the action in the

U.S. Open in San Diego as Clemson rising junior Kyle Stanley and former

Tiger golfer D.J. Strahan recorded solid starts in the first round of the

US Open yesterday. They were both in a large group -which included

Tiger Woods - off four strokes from the lead.  The second round gets underway

this morning.

In collegiate track and field, Univ. of South Carolina Gamecock hurdler

Jason Richardson captured first place in qualifying in the 110 meter hurdles

 in the NCAA Division I outdoor track and field championship in Des Moines, Iowa yesterday. His 13.26 time

qualified him for the semi-finals and he will compete today.

In American Legion baseball, Walhalla Post 124 defeated Fountain Inn last night

7-3 as pitcher Ty Burke of Pendleton pitched six innings and held Fountain Inn

to only one run and six hits. Relievers Matt Richardson of Walhalla and Justin Merck

of Seneca helped close the deal for Post 124. Post athletic officer Rick Gibson

reported a large Walhalla crowd followed the team to Fountain Inn. Tonite,

the Legion team will be back in action at home against Greenwood. Game time

is 7:3o pm at the Walhalla High field.

In men's senior softball, Lake Keowee's team went to Hendersonville, NC

and beat two different teams, 23-18 and 23-5. Claude Smith had an 8 for 8

day in the two games with two home runs and two triples. Other top hitters

for Lake Keowee were Jim Lamarand, Roger Jackson, Gary Savercool, Dennis

Wolovnik, Bruce Lettner and Rick Douden. Pitchers were Al Jillson in game one and

Bill Luke in game two. The Keowee Seniors who are 15-5 will host a four-team

tournament Saturday at Nettles Park iin Clemson.

 

June 12

In golf, Kyle Stanley - a 20 year-old rising junior at Clemson University-

joins former Tiger golfers Jonathan Byrd and D.J. Trahan in the field

of the 108th US Open today in San Diego. Another Tiger is among the field -

Tiger Woods.

In basketball, Anderson University women's basketball coach Jeff Dow resigned

Wednesday to accept the head coach job at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

In his final seson at Anderson, Coach Dow led the Lady Trojans to a 28-4 record, a regular

season conference title, and their third straight trip to the NCAA tournament.

And more golf news, Seneca High golfer Miller Capps has a first place score of 139 in the 13-14

age group after the second day of play at the 50th annual South Carolina Golf Association

Junior Championship in Irmo.

In American Legion baseball, the Walhalla Post 124 team is on the road this evening to

Fountain Inn. Game time is 7:30 pm. The team returns to the Walhalla High field

tomorrow, entertaining Greenwood at 7:30.

The Walhalla Braves 10-under baseball team beat Fair Oak for the Oconee County

Championship last Saturday. The team is coached by Ken Campbell, Bryan Fox,

and head coach Gary Woodard. Team members include Jacob Marcus, Cody Gibson, Tristan

Hightower, Braxton Foxx, Brandt Robinson, Ward Sprouse, Stephen Moore, Jack Campbell, Justin Woodard,

Tyler Spencer and Dylan Smith.  Congratluations Braves!

June 11

The Clemson Tiger men and women's track and field teams will be

 well-represented in the NCAA championships which start today at Drake University in

Des Moines, Iowa. Jacoby Ford and Travis Padgett are considered top

contenders in the 100 meters while Polly Hardy is expected to do well in the

100 meter hurdles and Patricia Mamona in the triple jump. Pole vaulter

Mitch Greeley and Matt Clark will run the 10,000 meters.

Meanwhile, sprinter Travis Padgett  has been named Southeast Region

Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country

Coaches' Association. The Tiger speedster claimed his third

consecutive ACC championship in the 100 meters and also won the NCAA

East Region Championship. His time of 9.96 is the second fastest in the world

this year.

Greenville native and former Furman University standout Sherri Turner

has earned a spot in the U.S. Women's Open Monday through

sectional qualifying in Rockville, MD. She had a 36-hole score of

143 to qualify.

In Golden Corner high school sports, Daniel High cornerback Jerrodd

Williams attended a football camp at Virginia Tech and has made a verbal

committment to accept a scholarship offer by VTech coach Frank Beamer.

The rising senior is exciting about attending and playing football for his

favorite university. Incidentally, Jerrodd also received an offer from Coach Steve

Spurrier at USC yesterday. Daniel Coach Randy Robinson is excited for his

young cornerback. Congratulations to Jerrodd Williams.

June 10

 

The Bi-Lo Charity Classic golf tournament was a major success raised

$5.6 million for local charities. About 1500 people gathered last nite

to celebrate in Greenville. The Classic has now raised more than $45

million since its inception in 1984.

 

In Clemson University Tiger tennis news, longtime tennis coach

Chuck Kriese is retiring and moving his family to Thailand later this

summer to assist in establishing a national tennis program. The 58-year

old coach, who spent 33 seasons at Clemson, will establish tennis clinics

in Thailand and is excited about bringing tennis to the country.

In baseball, the Greenville Drive closed out a weekend series with a 7-5 victory over

Asheville in South Atlantic League action Sunday. Greenville will begin a

three-game series at Hickory,NC Tuesday. The team returns home Friday night

to begin a three-game series with Augusta before the allstar break.

In college track and field, USC Gamecock hurdler Jason Richardson is ranked No.1 nationally

in the 110-meter hurdles and is preparing for the NCAA outdoor championships which

begin Wednesday. He is undefeated in the outdoor season.

Congressman Gresham Barrett has been unavailable to 96.3 WGOG Radio for his

regular monthly chat from Washington. The reason? He's limbering up the

pitching arm, as once again, he'll be the starting pitcher in this year's Congressional

softball game.

June 6

selected the 11th overall pick in the Major League baseball draft yesterday

and is headed to the Texas Rangers. Teammate Reese Havens was selected

22nd by the New York Mets. It was the second time in USC history that two players

were selected in the first round. Catcher Landon Powell and pitcher Matt Campbell

were first-round picks in 2004.

Stephens County High school infielder and pitcher Ethan Martin, a Clemson signee,

was drafted No. 15 overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was drafted as a pitcher.

He told Greg Wallace of the Anderson Independent-Mail that it was a dream come

true and what he had always dreamed of. Evan says he excited about going to

California to play. His mother grew up in California. Congratulations Ethan.

Meanwhile, Clemson University student-athletes in 15 sports programs

posted a 2.89 GPA for the spring semester and was the third best on record,

according to officials. Two-hundred and twenty-seven of the 456 student-athletes

on the rosters made the academic honor roll (3.0 or better), nearly a 50 percent

rate. The Clemson football team established an all-time record of 2.63 GPA for the spring

semester, breaking the mark of 2.58 established in the spring of 2001. Each of the top

nine semester GPAs on record by the football team have taken place during Coach

Tommy Bowden's tenure as head Tiger. That's quite a record!

June 5

The news is big for former Seneca High and Kansas City Royals baseball

star Willie Mays Aikens - he is a free man after serving 14 years in the

federal prison system for selling crack cocaine to an undercover officer, bribery,

and several gun charges. He had been sentenced for 20 years after his 1994 arrest.

ESPN reported that Aikens left federal prison in Jesup, Georgia and went to Kansas

City to enroll in a halfway house. He was a star in the 1980 World Series and

also played football and baseball for S.C. State after belting home runs out of the

old Jim Jones Field in Seneca.

University of South Carolina's slugger Justin Smoak may be picked in the top ten

of today's Major League draft and it will be decision time for him - whether to stay at Carolina

or take a major league contract.

In high school sports, Stephens County pitcher/infielder Ethan Martin is awaiting word

of the Major League draft today.

June 4

In college football -yep, it is getting that time again - the Clermson Tigers will open

their season August 30 against Alabama in the Georgia Dome before a primetime

ABC television audience. ABC officials made the announcement yesterday. The game

will be the first meeting of the two teams since 1975. Tiger Coach Tommy Bowden

said -quote- the game will be a great challenge for our team right from the get-go

and it will create a sense of urgency for our players here in the off-season." Kickoff is planned

for 8 pm. It will be the first time Clemson has played in ABC 's nationally televised Saturday

night game.

In Golden Corner high school sports, prayers and well wishes are pouring in for Daniel High

baasketball player Ryan Harless who was severely injured in an automobile crash Monday near

the school. The junior remains in serious, but stable condition, at Greenville Memorial Hospital

with a brain stem injury. Ryan's stepfather is Mickey Plyler of WCCP-104.9 radio. Daniel head

coach Jeff Maness said he was shocked when he heard of the accident and said the public outpouring

has been very encouraging to the family. The prognosis is undetermined and Coach Maness said -quote -

right now, I think everyone is just saying a lot of prayers and really thinking about the family and

cheering him on. Our prayers too - are for Ryan Harless.

The baseball and softball teams of Walhalla High School will be hosting instructional camps this month

at Sertoma Field. Retired Razorback baseball coach Ed Taylor will conduct the baseball camp which

runs June 9-12 from 9 am to noon. Cost is $55. Registrations begin at 8:30 June 9. The softball camp will

In professional baseball, the Greenville Drive has four players who have been

named to the 49th annual South Atlantic League All-Star game to be held

in Greensboro June 17. Named were pitcher Felix Doubront, catcher Luis

Exposito, first baseman Mike Jones and shortstop Yamaico Navarro. Greenville

general manager Kevin Boles will serve as a coach under Asheville Tourists

manager Joe Mikulik.

In basketball, Clemson University assistant coach Shaka Smart is headed to the

University of Florida. He has been an assistant under head coach Oliver Purnell

for the past two seasons and is considered one of the top young assistants in the

nation and was in charge of recruiting for the last two Tiger seasons. Those

recruits were regarded among the best in school history.

In Golden Corner high school sports -another honor for Walhalla High Lady Razorback soccer

player Cricket Wise. We told you yesterday of her selection as the Daily Journal/Daily Messenger

Golden Corner Girls Soccer Player of the Year. She has also been named the Anderson Independent-

Mail's Player of the Year in girls soccer. Cricket is headed to the College of Charleston next year.

Pendleton High School is hosting its second annual Skills and Drills Basketball Camp June 9-

June 2

In collegiate baseball, the season is over for the USC Gamecocks after

the team lost to NC State yesterday in the NCAA Regionals in Raleigh.

The Gamecocks had beaten James Madison earlier, but were edged by the

Wolfpack 2-1.

In high school baseball, the Stephens County, Ga Indians baseball team

fell to Cartersville in the state AAA baseball finals over the weekend.

In the deciding third game on Saturday the Indians lost 13-1 in a called

five-inning game. Stephens County finished the season as second in the

state with a 29-10 record.

In high school soccer, the Walhalla Lady Razorback's Cricket Wise is headed to

the College of Charleston next year after helping her team have the best season

in history with an 18-3-1 record and a trip to the AA Upper  State championship

game. The senior goalkeeper recorded 12 shutouts. She was named the Daily Journal/

Daily Messenger Golden Corner Player of the Year.

The Anderson Independent-Mail all-area boys soccer team has been named.

The members include Josh Soler of the Seneca Bobcats, Corey Champion and Eric Moxley

 of the Walhalla Razorbacks and Daniel Ramey of West Oak.

May 30

In collegiate golf, the Clemson Tigers came roaring back to take the lead

in the NCAA Division 1 golf championship at Purdue University in West

Lafayette, Ind. The Tigers lead UCLA by one-stroke at the halfway mark

of the tournament. Kyle Stanley continues to lead the Tigers. The field of 30 teams

will be cut after today's round to 15.

In baseball, the USC Gamecocks meet Charlotte today at 2 pm in the first round

of the Raleigh regionals of the NCAA tournament. Gamecock first baseman Justin

Smoak and College of Charleston third baseman Jeremie Tice were named

first team All-Americans yesterday by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Furman University has been cited with the Barrett-Bonner Award by the Southern

Conference for having the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league's

academic honor roll.

In Golden Corner American Legion baseball, the Walhalla Post 124 -down ten runs -

came roaring back to pull within one of Greenville last night at Razorback Field, but dropped

the hard-fought game. Coach Ed Taylor takes his Post 124 team to Greenwood for their next game.

 

 

In men's track and field, the Clemson Tigers take their biggest team of qualifiers in

 several years  into the NCAA East Regional Championship today in Tallahassee,Fl.

Sixteen athletes will compete in 12 events.

 

 

May 29

New contracts have been struck for Clemson University's Tommy Bowden and

Oliver Purnell. The football and basketball coaches contract details were released

by university officials yesterday. Coach Bowden will earn $1.83 million for the next year

in the contract that keeps him at Clemson through 2014. Under the new deal, he could earn

up to $700,000 additionally in incentives and a bonus of $200,000 for winning a national

championship which would be the first for the school since 1981. Coach Purnell received

a two-year extension after the Tigers made the NCAA tournament for the first time in

a decade. He gets $1 million a year....he wil also be at the university through 2014.

In golf, the Clemson men's golf team is currently in a tie for fourth place in the NCAA

Championships being held at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The Tigers are tied with Kent

State as play continues today. Sophomore All-American Kyle Stanley leads the Tigers.

 

May 28

In collegiate baseball post-season play, the USC Gamecocks take their 38-21

record to Raleigh today to meet University of North Carolina-Charlotte at 2 pm.

The Clemson golf team competes in the NCAA Nationals today and tomorrow at West

Lafayette, Indiana. The women's tennis team is also competing today in the NCAA in

West Lafayette.

The Walhalla Braves, sponsored by Foxx Electrical, won their second straight tournament

recently capturing the Super Saturday city tournament in Walhalla with 51 hits in three games.

The 10-under team is coached by Gary Woodard, Bryan Foxx and Ken Campbell.

In Golden Corner high school sports, Seneca High will unveil its new football team to

the community in the inaugural blue and gold football scrimmage today at 6 pm.

The game will be held at Bobcat Stadium and new head coach Ron Duncan extends a cordial

invitation. The game will serve as the final spring practice for Seneca. A BBQ fundraiser

will be held at 5 pm to benefit the football program as well as the cheerleading squad.

 

May 27

In college baseball, the Clemson Tigers are done for the year and will not

participate in post-season tournament play for the first time in 22 years.

The Tigers finished with a 31-27-1 record.

Meanwhile, the University of South Carolina and Coastal Carolina are the

only teams from the Palmetto State in this year's NCAA baseball

tournament. Coastal will host its first round as top seed while the

Gamecocks will be on the road to Raleigh. Coastal will greet the

Ivy League's Columbia University and USC will meet the University of

North Carolina-Charlotte on Friday.

In the season opener, Walhalla American Legion Post 124 beat Fountain Inn 5-3 in

what Legionnaire athletic director Rick Gibson called "a very exciting game."

Walhalla will host Greenville Thursday at 7:30 pm.

 

In college baseball, it is tournament time and the Clemson Tigers are

experiencing one of their worst seasons. Yesterday, the Tigers lost

probably their last shot at being considered for a 22nd straight regional

in the NCAA by dropping a 10-0 game to NC State in the second day of the

conference tournament. What hurt even more for Clemson fans was the calling

of the game after seven innings due to the mercy rule. The shutout was the first for

the Tigers in the ACC tournament in 11 years.

Meanwhile, the USC Gamecocks are staying alive in the SEC Tournament . Justin

Smoak hit a three-run homer and set a career record for RBIs with 200 in helping

the Gamecocks in their 11-3 defeat of Florida yesterday in Hoover, Ala. The Gamecocks will

meet Vanderbilt today at 3 pm.

May 22

In college baseball, a grand slam in the 10th inning propelled

the Furman Paladins over Appalachian State yesterday in the first round

of the Southern Conference tournament in Charleston. Furman's

Bobby Hubbard smashed the walk-off grandslam to give the Paladins the

10-8 victory. Furman will play No. 2 seed College of Charleston at

5 pm today.

The Clemson Tigers dropped a big one to Miami 7-1 in Jacksonville

yesterday. The opening day first round loss in the ACC Tournament

now means that the Tigers will need to beat NC State tonight and

then win over Georgia Tech Saturday in order to have a chance to

advance in the tournament. Tech beat NC State 10-9 yesterday.

Meanwhile, the USC Gamecocks led LSU 4-0 going into the bottom of

the ninth inning, but a Tiger rally put LSU on top at games end 5-4.

The firs round loss in the SEC tournament sends the Gamecocks against

Florida this morning at 10 am.

Lake Keowee Senior softball team played a triple header with

Hendersonville,NC Wednesday, taking one of the three. Jeff Sciallo led

all Keowee batters with 7 hits in the three games, followed by Bruce Lettner and

Don Borth with six hits each. A doubleheader in Charlotte on May 28 is

next on the schedule for the senior sluggers.

In Golden Corner high school sports, Daniel High senior baseball player Britt

Alexander , son of David and Joann Alexander, has signed a letter-of-intent to

play ball at Limestone College and will major in business. Congratulations!

 

May 21

In area college sports news, Clemson University did not violate NCAA rules during the recruitment

of a basketball player from North Augusta High School, according to an investigation of the

issue which concerned the signing of Bryan Narcissee. At issue was a practice session April 11

in which the North Augusta player participated along with 10 of his high school teammates.

He signed a national letter of intent with Clemson on April 16. In a move by the South Carolina High

School League, nine players from North Augusta were declared ineligible for the 2008-09 season and the team

was banned from pre-season and postseason. The high school is appealing the decision.

USC Gamecock's first baseman Justin Smoak was selected first team All-SEC yesterday. Gamecocks

selected to the second team were first baseman James Darnell, shortstop Reese Havens, and designated hitter

Phil Disher.

The Seneca 10-under girls softball team won the Seneca Recreation Department's 2008

Softball City Tournament recently. The team is coached by Mike Burton, Van Duncan, and Brooke

Burton. Congratulations!

And -as we announced yesterday - Jamie Garland becomes the new baseball coach at Walhalla, replacing

23-year coach Ed Taylor, his former coach.

 

May 20

In college baseball, two Clemson Tigers have been named to the All-ACC team.

Freshman Kyle Parker and pitcher D.J. Mitchell, a junior, were named to the first

team. Parker is only one of two freshman to be named to the first team. Mitchell

led the ACC in strikeouts for the regular season.

In other Clemson news, linebacker Cortney Vincent, who was suspended for

spring practice concerning a violation of team rules, is permanently off the

team, Coach Tommy Bowden announced yesterday. Vincent is a senior.

In Golden Corner high school sports, an era officially ends this morning at

Walhalla High School and a new one begins...the school is set to announce the

appointment of Jamie Garland as the Razorback's new head baseball coach.

Coach Garland will replaces the retiring Ed Taylor, the man who coached Jamie

Garland when he was a catcher for the Razors in the early 90's.

 

May 19

In golf, David Mathis got a three-shot victory Sunday over Roger Tambellini to

win the big prizes in the BMA Charity Pro-Am tournament - those big prizes

were the keys to a black 2008 BMW X5 and a check for $121,500. Mathis, age 34,

is a North Carolina native and said it was a great blessing to come and play well

for four days in the tournament and told The Greenville News -quote- "I'm just

looking forward to what God has for us down the road."

In college baseball, the Furman Paladins edged Georgia Southern 6-5 Saturday in the

final regular season game for both teams. The victory puts the Paladins as the third

seed in the start of this week's Southern Conference tournament in Charleston. The

Paladins will play Appalachian State at 1 pm Wednesday in the first round at Joseph P.

Riley Park. The Clemson Tigers swept Central Florida over the weekend and will enter

the ACC Tournament as a No. 8 seed and will play No. 1 Miami Wednesday in Jacksonville.

 

In Upstate athletics, The Riverside and Christ Church boys soccer teams each

win state titles Saturday at the University of South Carolina Saturday.  Riverside got its

12th state title in 14 with a 2-1 win over Chapin. Christ Church gained its

eight straight state title with a 1-0 shutout of Academic Magnet school.

May 16

 

In college baseball, the Furman Paladin-Georgia Southern game was rained

out last night and has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader starting

at 4 pm today. In action yesterday, the USC Gamecocks fell to Tennessee 13-2

and will have a re-match at 7 pm today. Meanwhile, the Clemson Tigers won 9-1

in Orlando against Central Florida. Another game in the seris is planned tonite.

 

Golfing enthusiasts are invited to Cross Creek Plantation this Saturday to cheer on

local talent hoping to qualify in this year's US Open. Mark Kern, director of golf at

Cross Creek Plantation located just outside Seneca on the Wells Highway says

there is no charge at attend the US Open Qualifying Tournament this Saturday

at Cross Creek. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and their walking shoes

in order to follow golfers around the course.

In Golden Corner high school sports, area football teams practiced in pads this week

as spring practice got underway...thanks to a state high school league ruling last month

allowing seven such practices.

 

May 15

In collegiate baseball today, the Clemson Tigers will travel to the University

of Central Florida in Orlando and the USC Gamecocks host Tennessee tonite at Sarge Frye Field.

Furman University hosts Georgia Southern today at 7 pm.

Speaking of Furman, the Lady Paladins Athletic Awards Banquet was held last nite. Page

Bridges, a Greenville native, was honored as the recipient of both the Elizabeth Blackwell

Academic Award and the Student-Athlete Achievement Award. Tennis player Laura Giola won

 the Player-of-the Year award, and women's golf coach Jen Hanna won the J. Lyles Alley

Coach of the Year Award.

 

May 14

Former Clemson football player Curtis Whitley, a three-year letterman

for the Tigers in the early nineties who went on to play in the NFL, was found

dead in his Texas home. Whitley, who started in 24 games for the Carolina

Panthers in 1995 and 96 seasons, was suspended by the NFL in 1996 and

in 1998 for violating the league's susbtance abuse policy. He did not return

to his football career after the second suspension. An investigation is

underway into the death of the 39-year old althlete.

In college baseball, the Tigers beat the College of Charleston 12-6 last nite.

The Furman Paladins baseball team lost to Tennessee 4-2.

In Golden Corner high school sports, the Walhalla Razorbacks boys soccer team

lost a a nailbiter and a heartbreaker in the Upper State playoff title game in

Greenwood as the Razors were edged by Emerald 3-2. Congratulations to Coach

Estes and his team for a great season!

In football, the Seneca Bobcats have lost their new assistant coach to the head

coaching job at T.L. Hanna in Anderson. Former Calhoun Falls  head coach Kenya

Fouch had been hired by new Bobcat coach Ron Duncan, but announced yesterday -

the second day of spring practice for the Bobcats that Coach Fouch was going to

Anderson

May 13

In area collegiate sports, concerns about the postseason will be set aside

tonight when the Clemson Tigers face the College of Charleston in their final

home game of the season. The Cougars are coached by John Pawlowski, a former

Clemson player and assistant coach, and his 13-year old daughter has been

undergoing treatment for PNET -a rare malignancy found in two percent of

children with cancer. Clemson coach Jack Leggett launched a fundraising effort early

this season to help the Pawlowski family and he will present a check to

the Mary-Louise Pawlowski Foundation prior to the game. A news release from the

university said Mary-Louise hopes to attend the game tonite. The Tigers will

wear their purple jerseys and caps as they did for a game in Charleston

Feb. 29. Purple is Mary-Louise favorite color.

The BMW Charity Pro-Am Golf Tournament this week has a number of

celebrities descending into the Upstate. During the tournament, pros, amateurs, and

celebrities are team in a four-day better-ball competition . The golfers will

rotate between each of the three courses on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with the

14 lowest scoring pro-amateur/celebrity teams advancing to the final round Sunday

at Thornblade Club in Greenville. Celebrities include George Rogers, Mark Rypien, Branford

Marsalis, Jennifer Mills, Catherine Bell, Greg Kinear, Joe Pesci, Dennis Quaid, Luke Wilson,

Kurt Russell, and Kordell Stewart among others.

In Golden Corner high school sports, the Walhalla Lady Razorbacks "kept it tough", especially

in the up game, but the nail-biter ended in a 1-0 loss and a season ending playoff game

against Woodruff yesterday for the Lady Razors who compiled an 18-3-1 record for the year.

Congratulations for a great season to Coach James Powell and the Lady Razors.

Meanwhile, the Walhalla Razorback boys soccer team will be at Emerald tonite

with their 18-4 record to battle for the Upper State championship. The Razors are the No. 2

seed and Coach Michael Estes says the Razors are ready.

West-Oak offensive lineman Alex McCaffery signed a national letter-of-intent to play

football at Pikeville College, Kentucky. West Oak line coach Jeremy Durham is exited to see

"Big Mac" go on in his football career. Alex will  return to Pikeville this summer with practice

starting soon, classes in August.

May 12

 

 

Clemson's Sunday win over Georgia Tech may help the Tigers ACC tournament bid.

The Tigers won in a big way -16-6  to close out the ACC regular

 season with a 26-25-1 record. Clemson will play its final regular-season home game Tuesday

against the College of Charleston. Game time is 7:15 pm at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

May 9

 

In college athletics, Clemson University will induct eight into the 2008

class of the Athletic Hall of Fame. The athletes are former women's basketball

coach Jim Davis. former football standouts Anthony Simmons and Willie

Underwood, Union native and two-sport letterman Billy Wingo and four female athletes:

former rowing team All-American Lucy Doolittle, All-American swimmer Ruth Grodsky,

track and field star Angel Fleetwood and former All-ACC basketball player Itoro Umoh.

The induction will take place Sept. 12 and the athletes will be honored  at halftime

 of the Clemson-NC State football game the following day.

In sports today, Clemson is a Georgia Tech for a baseball weekend series, the Clemson

women's tennis team meets Winthrop in the NCAA playoffs. South Carolina's tennis team

meets Virginia. The Furman women's tennis team will meet Michigan today in the first round

at the Clemson Regionals.

In college baseball, Clemson won over Furman last night at Fluor Field in

Greenville 11-5. The Tigers have a three-game series in Atlanta against

Georgia Tech this weekend to end the regular season in the ACC.

Furman travels to Appalchian State.

In Golden Corner high school sports, the Walhalla Razorback girls's

soccer team shutout Emerald last nite 1-0 to advance in the state playoffs.

Meanwhile, the West-Oak Lady Warrios beat Southside Christian  in sudden death to advance

May 7.

 

In college baseball, the Clemson Tigers will meet the Furman Paladins at Fluor Field

in Greenville tonite - first pitch at 7:15 pm.

Furman women's tennis player Lauren Tomory has been selected to participate

in the NCAA National Student -Athlete Leadership Development Conference

in two weeks in Orlando, Florida.

And more Furman sports news - the sixth-seeded Furman softball team will open

play in the 2008 Southern Conference Softball Championship today when it faces

host and third-seeded College of Charleston in a 5 pm contest at Patriots

Point in Mount Pleasant.

In Golden Corner high school sports, the West-Oak Warriors boys' soccer team

were edged 3-2 by Ninety Six and were eliminated in the state AA playoffs

yesterday. The match was the first-ever home playoff game for the Warriors

who finished the season at 9-8. The Wildcats of Ninety Six will next tangle with

the Walhalla Razorbacks -the second seed Upper state team - Thursday on the Walhalla

field.

In girls soccer playoff activity today, the Walhalla Lady Razorbacks will host Emerald

and West-Oak will host Southside Christian at 7 pm. Daniel will travel to Blythewood

for a Class AAA playoff match.

May 6

The Florida State Seminoles finished the job on the Clemson Tigers in

college baseball yesterday by a 4-2 score and a series sweep with the Tigers who

are now 24-23-1. Clemson will close out the ACC season this weekend at Georgia Tech.

In professional baseball, the Greenville Drive were edged by the Columbus Catfish 4-3

at Fluor Field in Greenville last nite. The two teams conclude their four-games series  at

7:05 pm.

In Golden Corner high school state playoff action, the Daniel Lady Lions soccer team made it happen

yesterday by shutting out Camden 10-0

In college baseball, the Clemson Tigers continue to struggle as they were

beaten for the second time this weekend by Florida State last nite 13-4.

Clemson will meet the Seminoles again today at 4pm at Doug Kingsmore

Stadium.

Meanwhile, the USC Gamecocks used a three-run homer to help get past

the Florida Gators 9-6 yesterday at Sarge Fry Field in Columbia. USC took the

final two games with Florida this weekend and has won the last nine three-game

series against Florida. The Gamecoks travel to Wofford tonite for a 7 pm matchup at

Russell King Field in Spartanburg. In collegiate women's softball,

UNC Greensboro completed a three-game sweep of Furman with a 2-0 win in Greensboro

yesterday. The Paladins will play the College of Charleston at 5 pm Wednesday.

 

In collegiate sports, Clemson Tiger basketball player Cliff Hammonds has been

selected as the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame's Athlete of the Year.

The senior guard from Cairo, Ga averaged 11/4 points and sparked the Tigers

to a 24-10 record and a No. 22 ranking in the final AP poll. He is a

three-time Academic All-ACC performer and finalist for the Chip Hilton

Basketball Hall of Fame Award.

In Golden Corner high school athletics, the Walhalla Razorbacks baseball team

will meet Mid-Carolina on the road today in the Upper state playoffs. Game time is 5 pm

and Coach Ed Taylor isn't quite finished yet as retiring coach of the Razorbacks.

In softball, allstate pitcher Stephanie Mihaly help lead the Seneca Lady Bobcats to a 7-1

plaoff win against Wade Hampton. They will meet Riverside in Greer Wednesday.

Well, the West-Oak Lady Warriors took it to the limit and beyond yesterday. In a ten-

inning game, they lost 4-3 to Broome in the playoffs thus ending their season.

However, most starters return next year as the team moves up to Western AA to join local

teams Daniel and Seneca.

The Walhalla Razorback boys soccer team stayed undefeated with a 13-0 victory over

Crescent on Senior Night. The Razorbacks are awiting word of their first opponent in the

Class AA state playoffs. The state committee meets Friday to decide.

The Lady Razorback soccer team won over Southside Christian 4-1 and will conclude

their season tonite with Senior Night hosting Oconee Christian Academy.

In action today, Pendleton's baseball team travels to Batesburg-Leesville in Class AA playoff action,

the Tamassee-Salem Eagles travel to Great Falls for Class A playoffs, and as previously mentioned,

Walhalla travels to Mid-Carolina in the Class AA playoffs. In boys soccer, Pendleton will host

Easley and West-Oak travels to Palmetto. In girls soccer, Pendleton visits Easley. In

softball, Daniel hosts Chester in the Class AA playoffs and Pendleton travels to Batesburg-Leesiville

for Class AA playoffs.

 

In college sports, Furman's fullback Jerome Felton got his phone call yesterday

and was selected in the fifth round of the NFL draft. He will be playing for the

Detroit Tigers. Meanwhile, Clemson Tiger offensive lineman Barry Richardson

got the nod in the 6th round from the Kansas City Chiefs. Gamecock running back

Cory Boyd was taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 7th round.

In Golden Corner high school sports, the Walhalla Razorback baseball team beat

Columbia 15-2 and has given retiring coach Ed Taylor at least one more game.

Chad Guinn and Jake Wolf teamed up for a couple of home runs in the win. The

Razorbacks will play today against the loser of the Mid-Carolina - Chesnee matchup.

Meanwhile, Seneca lost to Riverside 6-4 and will have to win today in order

to reach its fourth straight district final. The Lady Cats will play the winner
